Why is the Algarve a snorkelling paradise?

The Algarve, with its crystal-clear waters and diverse marine life, offers some of the best snorkelling experiences in Europe. From colourful fish to fascinating rock formations, the underwater world here is a treasure trove waiting to be explored.

Where are the best spots for snorkelling in the Algarve?

The best spots for snorkelling in the Algarve include:

Praia da Marinha

Known for its picturesque cliffs and enclosed bays, Praia da Marinha offers excellent visibility and an abundance of marine life. It’s perfect for both beginners and experienced snorkelers.

Praia do Camilo

This hidden gem near Lagos boasts dramatic cliffs and clear waters, making it an ideal spot for snorkelling enthusiasts. The unique rock formations underwater provide a stunning backdrop for your aquatic adventure.

Praia da Luz

This family-friendly beach in a charming fishing village offers calm waters and excellent snorkelling opportunities. It’s a great place to introduce children to the joys of underwater exploration.

Praia de Benagil

Home to the famous Benagil Cave, this beach offers a unique snorkelling experience. Explore the waters around the cave and discover a variety of marine life.

Praia do Burgau

This secluded beach is a haven for snorkelers and nature lovers alike. With its clear waters and rich marine biodiversity, it’s one of the best snorkelling spots in the western Algarve.

What marine life can I expect to see?

The Algarve’s waters are teeming with life. You might encounter:

  • Colourful fish species like sea bream, mullet, and wrasse
  • Octopuses and cuttlefish
  • Starfish and sea urchins
  • Various species of crabs and small shellfish

When is the best time for snorkelling in the Algarve?

The best time for snorkelling in the Algarve is from June to September when the water is warmest and visibility is at its best. However, with over 300 days of sunshine per year, the Algarve offers good snorkelling conditions almost year-round.

What equipment do I need?

Basic snorkelling gear includes:

  • Mask
  • Snorkel
  • Fins (optional, but recommended)
  • Wetsuit (recommended for cooler months)

Many beaches and resorts offer equipment rental if you don’t have your own.

Are there any safety tips I should know?

While snorkelling in the Algarve is generally a safe and enjoyable activity, it’s important to prioritise safety to ensure a worry-free experience.

Always snorkel with someone

This is crucial for safety as your partner can keep an eye on you and assist if you encounter any difficulties. Take turns watching each other and stay within easy communicating distance. If you’re travelling alone, consider joining a guided snorkelling tour where professionals can ensure your safety.

Check local weather forecasts and sea conditions

Be aware of tides, currents, and wind directions. Avoid snorkelling during rough seas or when strong currents are present and pay attention to any warning flags on the beach.

Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings

Some snorkelling spots may have boat traffic nearby. Consider using a brightly coloured snorkel or wearing a high-visibility swimming cap to make yourself more visible to boaters. Avoid snorkelling in designated boating lanes or busy harbours.

Respect marine life

Observe marine life from a respectful distance without touching or disturbing creatures or coral. Never attempt to feed fish or other marine animals, as this can disrupt their natural behaviour and diet.

Use reef-safe sun cream

Choose products labelled as “reef-safe” or “ocean-friendly” that don’t contain chemicals harmful to marine life. Apply sun cream at least 30 minutes before entering the water to allow it to absorb into your skin.

Know your limits and stay within them

Be honest about your swimming abilities and don’t push yourself beyond your comfort zone. If you’re a beginner, start in shallow, calm waters and gradually move to more challenging areas as you gain confidence.

Learn basic snorkelling techniques

Practice using your mask and snorkel in shallow water first. Learn how to clear your mask and snorkel of water while in the sea. Also, master proper fin techniques to move efficiently through the water without tiring quickly.

Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun

Drink plenty of water before and after your snorkelling session to avoid dehydration. Wear a hat and seek shade when you’re not in the water to protect yourself from the strong Algarve sun.

300 days of sun per year

With around 3000 hours of sun per year and over 300 days of sun per year, Algarve villa rentals have never been such a stellar idea!

Differences within the Algarve

The climate in the Algarve is a bit drier than in other parts of Portugal. In the interior of the Algarve, it can be really hot and dry, due to the absence of wind from the sea. This sometimes leads to forest fires, like in Monchique. The east of the Algarve is usually a bit hotter and drier than the west of the Algarve, because of the influence of the Atlantic Ocean in the west.

Rainfall

In general, it rains little in the Algarve. Most of the rain falls in the period from November until the end of March. The summer is usually quite dry. In the winter it rarely gets below 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) and it rarely snows.

Sea water temperatures

The sea water is around 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer and 16 degrees Celsius (61 degrees Fahrenheit) in winter. Because of the influence of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean winds, the sea water is generally warmer in the east of the Algarve than in the west of the Algarve.

January, February and March in The Algarve

algarve vi

January and February tend to be the coldest months at around 8 – 16 degrees Celsius with March usually seeing an increase of a few degrees. These 3 months are also the wettest, although rainfall isn’t as frequent as the UK.

April and May in The Algarve

Perfect for walking, exploring, golf and other sporting activities as these months tend to have perfect temperatures for the sportier travellers. Also, these are great months to visit if you don’t like it too hot but want the sunshine.

June in The Algarve

As the calendar turns to June, the Algarve truly comes alive. The days grow longer and warmer, with azure skies overhead. The temperatures dance in the 22 to 28 degree range – hot enough for beach days and balmy evenings, but rarely crossing into sweltering.

It’s the perfect climate for golf and tennis – sports that thrive during Portugal’s gloriously long summer days. And for those more inclined towards relaxation, the region’s beaches and pools beckon for long afternoons of lounging with a cocktail in hand.

When the sun dips towards the horizon each evening, the possibilities open up even more. Meander along coastal trails at golden hour, enjoy a sunset dinner at a cliffside restaurant, or simply relax on your villa’s terrace and watch the pastel colors stretch across the sky.

Truly, June represents the Algarve at its finest. The crowds of high season have yet to arrive, and the temperatures are ideal. Whether your ideal holiday involves sporting adventures or simple indulgence, you’re certain to find it here. June is the month where the Algarve comes into full and vibrant bloom!

July and August in The Algarve

And the summer holidays begin… The Algarve is a very popular location through the school holidays and with approx. 200 km of beach from west to east there is plenty of room for everyone. Along the coast are some fabulous resorts and locations.

Our favourite area is the Golden Triangle (Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago, Dunas Douradas) and this is the most popular along with Vilamoura and Albufeira. Temperature really do heat up in these months from around 24 – 33 degrees Celsius. Definitely the time of year for sun worshipers, ocean lovers, and lively restaurants/venues.

September and October in The Algarve

September and October are great times to visit if you don’t want the hustle and bustle of the June, July, and August months. The beaches are quieter and in general, everywhere is a little more sedate and relaxing. The temperatures are still bikini weather, especially in September and both months are similar to June, nice for evening or early morning walks.

September tends to be around the 20 – 28 degrees Celsius mark and October cooling a little to around 18 – 25 degree Celsius. October also a great month for golf, walking and other sports activities.

November and December in The Algarve

These are the months when the temperatures start to fall and the bigger coats come out! It can be a bit rainy in November and December but daytime temperatures can still be very pleasant (T-shirt weather) at around 11 – 20 degrees Celsius.

You do feel the cooler temperatures in the evenings during this time. A good month for long walks! The Ria Formosa nature reserve is a fabulous place to walk along the Boardwalk and spot the flamingos.

We specialise in luxury apartments and villas in and around Vilamoura, Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago. We have a carefully selected portfolio of properties. Our specialist team can help guide you in creating your perfect Algarve villa or apartment holiday.
